1. Swap the battery
A weak battery is the most common reason a fob stops working, especially if the range has been getting shorter. Most use a coin cell printed right on the old battery.
Many push to start cars still start with a dead fob if you hold it right against the start button. Check your owner’s manual for the exact spot.
2. Check the case and buttons
Drops crack cases and loosen the battery contacts. If the buttons feel mushy or the case pops open, the circuit board inside may not be making contact.
3. Try your spare
If the spare works, the problem is the fob. If neither works, the issue may be on the car side, and that’s worth a call.
When it needs programming
If a fresh battery doesn’t fix it, or you’re replacing a lost or broken fob, it has to be programmed to your car. That used to mean a dealer appointment and a waiting room.
We bring the programming equipment to you. Key fob programming starts at $85, plus the fob if you need a new one. Bought a fob online? We can usually program that one too. Just ask when you call.
Push to start and smart keys
Proximity smart keys are the priciest keys to replace at the dealer. We program them where your car is parked, starting at $200 with the key included for most vehicles. See smart keys and push to start.
